I am Milly Nansereko, a third-year student and Vice President of the KIU Student Guild at Kampala International University (KIU). This is my message to my beloved KIU community. As an aspiring educator, I surely have to share any advice I can on how to navigate the steep roads in life and arrive at your beautiful destination.
Life is an equation
Life is seen by many as the state that follows birth, and precedes death; the state of being alive and living. But what if life is more than just that? What if life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away?
Life gives you a blank canvas each day, a paintbrush in your hand, and the opportunity to create with an artistic touch, the person you want to be. As long as the mind can envision the bigger picture and the heart can will it to its completion, then nothing can stop the artist that designs his/her own destiny.
Goal + Efforts + Positivity + Determination = Success
If you tried to look at life from the angle of the 5Ws + H, you’ll come to realize how it falls more into perspective;
What: The goal you are working towards. The Beautiful Destination.
Why: The reason you are working towards that particular goal.
Where: The place you envision yourself carrying out that goal.
When: The period when you want to achieve the end goal.
Who: The people that surround you and push you towards and help you achieve your goal
How (strategies): The step-by-step process that will ensure your constant progress towards your goal.
So as you navigate that problematic road, calculate every step, every corner, every turn. Pay attention to the signposts that often warn about dangers. Dodge the potholes that shock and endeavour to stay in your lane lest you sway astray to a road that does not lead to your beautiful destination. Try new things, play a new tune, set your life on fire and ride with those who fan your flames.
Education beyond the classroom
Being a truly international community with students and staff from all over the world, KIU prepares students for inclusive multipurpose activities that bring us together as one. The different activities such as games like football, netball, wood ball, Chess, table tennis, debate competition, dialogues about various themes, public lectures, and academic awareness conference are all ways to spice up your life in a developmental manner.
Participate in these activities so that besides education, you can be exposed to opportunities that follow. Artists like Joshua Cheptegai, Naggayi, Elliot Kipchoge, Serena Williams, and Lionel Messi took the blank canvas paintbrush that life offered them, and they drew away.
