Joshua Kato, the new captain of the KIU Soccer Team, has promised to lead the team to it’s first ever University Football League (UFL) victory.

He is currently carrying out individual physical and physchological training to remain fit under the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Joshua is replacing Jackson Muwanguzi as Captain of Akabyayi’s KIU Soccer Team for the 2020-2021 Football season. He is optimistic that KIU will reach far in this season’s UFL provided the current COVID-19 situation settles so as to allow the league’s progress.

“We are going further than before this season,” Joshua said. “We are already in quarters and the players are all aiming for the best.”

Joshua also said that he is prepared to use his past winning experience to inspire the team to scores of victories during his reign as Captain.

“I also call upon the KIU Community and well wishers to maintain the support and team spirit,”  Joseph added.

The 23-year-old holding midfielder had a tremendous start to life at KIU, making two assists in three games played in UFL before the break, hence contributing to the team’s unbeaten run so far this season. KIU won once and drew twice to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2020 UFL.

About Joshua Kato

Joshua Kato is a first year Mass Communications student. He was born on 18th April 1997 at Mulugo Hospital in Kampala, although his parents had travelled all the way from Mbarara ahead of his birth.

He started his football career at a very tender age while in primary school, playing for Kireka SDA Primary School at different levels and winning many trophies. His phenomenal soccer abilities became more evident at Katikamu SDA Secondary School where he joined for ordinary level.

During his time at Katikamu, the school conquered Luweero District in the Coca-Cola Post-Primary Football Championships. His agility, strength, and excellent ball-passing made him indispensable in the central midfield.

He joined Namboole High School for advanced level, helping them to win the regional Post-Primary tournament in 2015. He also helped the school to put up an exceptional performance at the district level during the two years he spent with them.

Joshua first joined KIU in 2017 with great determination to join the University Football Team but couldn’t satisfy the then coach to consider him. When Bugema University learnt that he was not playing, they hurried and lured him to transfer to their team.

He then joined Bugema University after a few months at KIU. He says that his dream was to grow his football career and that it was difficult for him to deny Bugema’s offer.

He left Bugema University to rejoin KIU for a scholarship early this year and was immediately inaugurated into the 2020 UFL 23-man squad for the University.

While at Bugema University, Joshua helped the University Football Team to win two Bronze medals in 2019 when they finished in the third position of the University Football League and the AUSS games in Kisubi respectively.

Since joining the KIU Football Team in January, the team has not been them same. He has helped boost attacking, ball possession, and the overall intensity of the team.  His two assists in three games did much to propel the team to the to the quarter finals of the 2020 University Football League.

“He has also played a pivotal role in improving the way the team defends,” says KIU TV Sports Reporter, Asaph Taremwa.

Joshua is a strong admirer of Barcelona’s Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets whose playing style he mimicks.

“I love Sergio’s playing style of passing the ball, making interceptions, and even his composure,” Joshua says.

It only takes a collection of quality, vision, trust, and other key leadership skills for a new player of Joshua’s  caliber to be voted unanimously by the team’s management and fellow players as captain.

He replaces Muwanguzi Jackson who has been the captain of the team for two years. Jackson is currently completing his last semester at KIU
