In only one semester of the StartHub Africa Entrepreneurship Academy, students learnt how to develop innovative and creative business ideas and to turn these ideas into real working enterprises. At the final pitch-event on the 18th of May, the KIU teams did a great job in presenting their businesses together with 34 other start-ups from 7 different Universities.

A business in only one semester? Yes, it’s possible! Take a look at two amazing start-ups that came out of last semester’s entrepreneurship Academy at KIU:

SEC TECH SMART SOLUTIONS

The “SEC TECH ELECTRICAL SOLUTIONS” team comprised of John Sseguya, Nassali Racheal Mbera and Wafula Bena Masimbo proved that you can develop an innovative business solution that creates money and adds value at the same time and all this in only one semester.  How? The team realized that many famers have a hard time with irrigation using manual pumps that are tiresome and less effective. To solve this problem, the team came up with an electronic smart sprayer that can be used for irrigation thus making farming much easier.  The SEC TECH ELECTRICAL SOLUTIONS team have already sold their first two products.

John Sseguya explains “Our Vision is to become the leading supplier of farming equipment of higher quality and convenience.  StartHub Africa gave us the knowledge to turn our business idea into reality and the confidence to keep working on our Vision!”

2) WASTE MANAGEMENT

Waste Management team collecting materials

Another great team tackled the huge problem of plastic pollution in Uganda.  Peter Maswi, Peace Mwambu and Aisha Ganda developed a system that makes eco-friendly bricks out of plastic waste. Their Vision is “To preserve, conserve and create a Sustainable and Safe Environment for everyone and everything”.

Mwambu Peace states “I joined StartHub Africa because I wanted to learn something new about myself.  During the academy, I gained new experience and even started my own business in waste management. That’s even more than I had expected!”
